A meaningful handmade gift for anyone with a connection to this magnificent bay and beloved town on the West Cork coast.
Bring home the beauty of Bantry Bay with this beautifully handcrafted round wooden map. Stretching deep into the heart of West Cork between the Beara Peninsula to the south and the Sheep's Head Peninsula to the north, Bantry Bay is one of the longest and most dramatic sea inlets in Ireland — a deep, sheltered fjord-like bay of extraordinary beauty that has shaped the history and character of this corner of Cork for centuries. The town of Bantry sits at the bay's head, its market square, colourful shopfronts and the magnificent Bantry House and Gardens overlooking the water in one of the finest settings of any Irish town. Whiddy Island sits in the shelter of the bay, its history ranging from an ancient church and castle to the scene of the Betelgeuse tanker disaster of 1979 — one of the most tragic events in Irish maritime history. The French attempted to land here in 1796 in support of the United Irishmen, and the bay's strategic depth has made it a place of historical significance for centuries.
This handcrafted 3D wooden map captures Bantry Bay, Whiddy Island, Bantry town and the surrounding West Cork landscape in layered detail — made by hand in our Sligo studio from sustainable materials.
Perfect for:
- Sailors and boaters who know Bantry Bay's deep, sheltered waters as one of the finest cruising grounds on the south coast of Ireland
- History and heritage lovers drawn to Bantry House, the French Armada connection and the rich maritime history of the bay
- Walkers and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Sheep's Head Way, the Beara Way and the extraordinary coastal scenery on either side of the bay
- Anyone with a connection to Bantry, whether you grew up there, holiday in West Cork each year, or simply love this magnificent corner of Cork
Make it personal:
Add a brass pin to mark a favourite spot — Bantry House, Whiddy Island, a favourite anchorage, a family home or a special place along the bay — with a short engraved message on the back.
Our Local Spots maps are round, framed wooden 3D maps, designed to capture meaningful Irish places in a simple, tactile format.
Each map measures approximately 220mm across and 42mm deep. It is ready to hang and also comes with a small clip-together stand, so it can be displayed on a wall, shelf, desk or sideboard.
Each map is framed without glass, allowing the depth, texture and natural wood grain to remain visible. Available with a natural or black frame.
Depths and elevations are shown in metres where included in the design.
You can add a short engraved message to the back of your map and a brass pin to mark a special place on the front for an additional charge.
To add this option, select “Map with engraving + brass pin” before adding the map to your cart, then enter your message and the Eircode or location details in the box provided.
If the place does not have an Eircode, you can describe the location instead.
Each Local Spots map is designed and made by Outcrop in our County Sligo studio.
We use geographic data to create the layered map design, then laser cut, stain, hand-sand, finish, frame and check each piece in our workshop before it is packed for delivery.
Made in small batches, each map carries the natural warmth of wood and the care of something made by hand.
Each Local Spots map is made from FSC-certified bamboo plywood, chosen for its strength, fine grain and natural warmth.
Our round frames are made from FSC-certified birch, sourced from sustainably managed Finnish forests. We use water-based, non-toxic glues and stains to finish each piece by hand.
Your map is wrapped in protective tissue and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box. Our packaging is plastic-free, and each piece is designed to be kept, gifted and enjoyed for years.
Your map comes ready to hang, and also includes a small clip-together wooden stand for displaying it on a shelf, desk or sideboard.
To use the stand, pop out the two pieces, slot them together and rest your map securely on top.
For best results, display indoors and avoid prolonged direct sunlight,
as this may gradually affect the blue colour or natural bamboo tone over time.
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
Each Local Spots map is made to order in our Sligo studio, rather than held in large quantities of stock. This helps us make carefully, reduce waste and manage our small workshop space.
Please allow up to 2 weeks for dispatch during our normal production flow.
Your map will be carefully wrapped and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box, ready to give as a gift. We do not include pricing inside the parcel, so it can be sent directly to the recipient.
If your order is a gift, you can leave us a note at checkout with any packing or delivery details.
If you need your map sooner, please contact us before ordering and we’ll let you know what is possible.
