Killala Bay · Cuan Chill Ala · Co. Mayo, Ireland
A meaningful handmade gift for anyone with a connection to this historic and beautiful bay on the north Mayo coast.
Discover the wild beauty of Killala Bay with this beautifully handcrafted round wooden map. Stretching along the north Mayo coast between the towns of Killala and Ballina, this broad, shallow bay opens out to the Atlantic with a coastline of sandy beaches, dune systems and quiet headlands that see few visitors despite their extraordinary beauty. Killala itself is one of the most historically significant towns in the west of Ireland — it was here in August 1798 that a French expeditionary force under General Humbert landed in support of the United Irishmen rebellion, an event that sent shockwaves through the British establishment and is still remembered with pride in Mayo to this day. The River Moy, one of Ireland's greatest salmon rivers, flows into the bay at Ballina — a town synonymous with Atlantic salmon fishing and the gateway to the wild landscapes of north Mayo.
This handcrafted 3D wooden map captures Killala Bay, the River Moy, Ballina and the surrounding north Mayo landscape in layered detail — made by hand in our Sligo studio from sustainable materials.
Perfect for:
- Anglers and salmon fishing enthusiasts who know the River Moy and Killala Bay as one of Ireland's greatest fishing destinations
- History lovers drawn to the story of the 1798 French landing at Killala and its extraordinary place in Irish revolutionary history
- Walkers and nature lovers exploring the wild beaches, dune systems and headlands of the north Mayo coast
- Anyone with a connection to Killala Bay, whether you grew up nearby, fish the Moy each season, or simply love this unspoiled corner of north Mayo
Make it personal:
Add a brass pin to mark a favourite spot — the bay, the River Moy, Killala town, Ballina, a family home or a special place along the north Mayo coast — with a short engraved message on the back.
Our Local Spots maps are round, framed wooden 3D maps, designed to capture meaningful Irish places in a simple, tactile format.
Each map measures approximately 220mm across and 42mm deep. It is ready to hang and also comes with a small clip-together stand, so it can be displayed on a wall, shelf, desk or sideboard.
Each map is framed without glass, allowing the depth, texture and natural wood grain to remain visible. Available with a natural or black frame.
Depths and elevations are shown in metres where included in the design.
You can add a short engraved message to the back of your map and a brass pin to mark a special place on the front for an additional charge.
To add this option, select “Map with engraving + brass pin” before adding the map to your cart, then enter your message and the Eircode or location details in the box provided.
If the place does not have an Eircode, you can describe the location instead.
Each Local Spots map is designed and made by Outcrop in our County Sligo studio.
We use geographic data to create the layered map design, then laser cut, stain, hand-sand, finish, frame and check each piece in our workshop before it is packed for delivery.
Made in small batches, each map carries the natural warmth of wood and the care of something made by hand.
Each Local Spots map is made from FSC-certified bamboo plywood, chosen for its strength, fine grain and natural warmth.
Our round frames are made from FSC-certified birch, sourced from sustainably managed Finnish forests. We use water-based, non-toxic glues and stains to finish each piece by hand.
Your map is wrapped in protective tissue and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box. Our packaging is plastic-free, and each piece is designed to be kept, gifted and enjoyed for years.
Your map comes ready to hang, and also includes a small clip-together wooden stand for displaying it on a shelf, desk or sideboard.
To use the stand, pop out the two pieces, slot them together and rest your map securely on top.
For best results, display indoors and avoid prolonged direct sunlight,
as this may gradually affect the blue colour or natural bamboo tone over time.
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
Each Local Spots map is made to order in our Sligo studio, rather than held in large quantities of stock. This helps us make carefully, reduce waste and manage our small workshop space.
Please allow up to 2 weeks for dispatch during our normal production flow.
Your map will be carefully wrapped and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box, ready to give as a gift. We do not include pricing inside the parcel, so it can be sent directly to the recipient.
If your order is a gift, you can leave us a note at checkout with any packing or delivery details.
If you need your map sooner, please contact us before ordering and we’ll let you know what is possible.
