A meaningful handmade gift for anyone captivated by this iconic and legendary mountain in the heart of Yeats Country.
Discover the dramatic beauty of Benbulben with this beautifully handcrafted round wooden map. One of Ireland's most instantly recognisable and beloved mountains, Benbulben rises from the Sligo plain in a great flat-topped wall of carboniferous limestone, its sheer north face and dramatic plateau making it one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the Irish landscape. The map captures the full drama of the mountain and its surroundings in extraordinary layered detail — Benbulben's summit plateau at 526m, the deep glacial valley of Gleniff cutting into the mountain's eastern flank, Truskmore rising to 647m on the Dartry range, the glittering waters of Glencar Lake nestled at the foot of the mountains and Drumcliffe in the valley below — where W.B. Yeats is buried in the shadow of the mountain he loved and wrote about throughout his life. Under bare Ben Bulben's head, in Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid — these mountains are woven into the fabric of Irish literature as deeply as any landscape in the country.
This handcrafted 3D wooden map captures Benbulben, Gleniff, Truskmore, Glencar Lake and Drumcliffe in layered detail — made by hand in our Sligo studio from sustainable materials, with Benbulben visible from our workshop on a sunny day.
Perfect for:
- Walkers and hikers who have climbed Benbulben's plateau and experienced the extraordinary views across Sligo and Donegal
- Yeats enthusiasts and literary lovers drawn to Benbulben's deep connection to the poetry and life of W.B. Yeats
- Nature lovers and wild swimmers who know the beautiful Glencar Lake and its waterfall at the foot of the mountains
- Anyone with a connection to Benbulben, whether you grew up in its shadow, walk its plateau each year, or simply love this iconic mountain and the Sligo landscape it defines
Make it personal: Add a brass pin to mark a favourite spot — the summit of Truskmore, Glencar Lake, Drumcliffe churchyard, a family home or a special place in the shadow of Benbulben — with a short engraved message on the back.
Our Local Spots maps are round, framed wooden 3D maps, designed to capture meaningful Irish places in a simple, tactile format.
Each map measures approximately 220mm across and 42mm deep. It is ready to hang and also comes with a small clip-together stand, so it can be displayed on a wall, shelf, desk or sideboard.
Each map is framed without glass, allowing the depth, texture and natural wood grain to remain visible. Available with a natural or black frame.
Depths and elevations are shown in metres where included in the design.
You can add a short engraved message to the back of your map and a brass pin to mark a special place on the front for an additional charge.
To add this option, select “Map with engraving + brass pin” before adding the map to your cart, then enter your message and the Eircode or location details in the box provided.
If the place does not have an Eircode, you can describe the location instead.
Each Local Spots map is designed and made by Outcrop in our County Sligo studio.
We use geographic data to create the layered map design, then laser cut, stain, hand-sand, finish, frame and check each piece in our workshop before it is packed for delivery.
Made in small batches, each map carries the natural warmth of wood and the care of something made by hand.
Each Local Spots map is made from FSC-certified bamboo plywood, chosen for its strength, fine grain and natural warmth.
Our round frames are made from FSC-certified birch, sourced from sustainably managed Finnish forests. We use water-based, non-toxic glues and stains to finish each piece by hand.
Your map is wrapped in protective tissue and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box. Our packaging is plastic-free, and each piece is designed to be kept, gifted and enjoyed for years.
Your map comes ready to hang, and also includes a small clip-together wooden stand for displaying it on a shelf, desk or sideboard.
To use the stand, pop out the two pieces, slot them together and rest your map securely on top.
For best results, display indoors and avoid prolonged direct sunlight,
as this may gradually affect the blue colour or natural bamboo tone over time.
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
Each Local Spots map is made to order in our Sligo studio, rather than held in large quantities of stock. This helps us make carefully, reduce waste and manage our small workshop space.
Please allow up to 2 weeks for dispatch during our normal production flow.
Your map will be carefully wrapped and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box, ready to give as a gift. We do not include pricing inside the parcel, so it can be sent directly to the recipient.
If your order is a gift, you can leave us a note at checkout with any packing or delivery details.
If you need your map sooner, please contact us before ordering and we’ll let you know what is possible.
