We've mapped over 100 places at this stage, but the one you're after might not be among them — a townland nobody outside it has heard of, the hill behind your parents' house, the stretch of water you learned to swim in. That's what this is for. You tell us the place, and we make the map that doesn't exist yet.

It's built the same way as every other round map we make: bamboo, cut in layers and stacked up so the ground reads as real height under your hand, set into our own round birch frame. A brass pin marks the spot that matters and your words go on the back, both part of the price rather than extras.

Most of the €280 is the design

Drawing a place nobody has asked for before is the slow part. We work out where the frame should sit, what's in it and what's left out, how the contours need to read at this size, and where the names belong. The cutting and building comes after, and that's the part we know by heart.

So once your design exists, more maps from it are €99 each. If three of you want the home place, or you'd like one for your own wall and one to send to your sister, you only pay for the design once. Every one of them is still cut, stacked and finished by hand — no two come out quite identical anyway.

How we design it

The map itself is ours to draw. Aran has been designing these for years, and a fair bit of what makes one work isn't obvious from the outside — how far out to set the frame so that flatter ground still reads as somewhere, which contours to let carry the piece, where a name can sit without crowding the thing it's naming. Two maps of the same square mile, drawn differently, aren't the same map at all.

So here's how the work splits. You tell us the place and what matters about it. We decide how it's drawn. Before we start you'll see the area on a Google Maps view with the boundary marked, so you know exactly what's in and what's out — and that's the stage to speak up, because once it's agreed we go and make it.

What you won't get is a render of the finished design to approve. The design is the thing you're commissioning, and reworking it on screen is where the cost and the weeks would go. It's closer to commissioning a painting than ordering a print. You choose the subject. We decide how to paint it.

How ordering works

  1. Order here, and tell us everything in the boxes below. This is the only point where we gather it, so take a minute over it.
  2. Within a few days we'll send you a Google Maps view with the proposed area marked.
  3. You confirm it or tell us to shift it — reckon on about a week for this between us. If we haven't heard back within 7 days we'll go ahead with the area as shown, rather than leave it sitting.
  4. From the day the area is agreed, it's 3 weeks to design and make.
  5. It posts out tracked, in plastic-free packaging.

About 4 weeks from order to posting, then, as long as you come back to us promptly on the area.

What we need from you

The place, as precisely as you can give it. A townland, a village, a beach, a hill, a lake — any of those is plenty. "Donegal" isn't: the county's too big to sit on a map this size and we'd only be guessing which part you meant.

The spot for the brass pin — a house, a summit, a harbour, wherever the story actually happened.

The words for the back. A date, a name, a line that only means something to the two of you.

And if there are names you want on the map that don't appear on the usual ones, the local name for a field or a rock, send those along. That's often the detail that changes someone's face when they open it.
