Lough Key · Loch Cé · Co. Roscommon, Ireland
A meaningful handmade gift for anyone with a connection to this jewel of a lake in the heart of the Irish midlands.
Discover the extraordinary beauty of Lough Key with this beautifully handcrafted round wooden map. One of the most scenic and island-rich lakes in Ireland, Lough Key sits in the heart of County Roscommon, its intricate shoreline of wooded bays, rocky outcrops and scattered islands making it one of the most visually complex and rewarding lakes in the country — and one of the most beautiful to render in layered wood. The Boyle Canal connects the lake to the River Shannon navigation to the west, while Lough Key Forest Park — one of Ireland's finest woodland parks — wraps around the southern shore, its ancient woodland, bog gardens and adventure trails drawing visitors throughout the year. The lake's many islands include the romantically ruined castle on Rock Island, visible from the forest park and one of the most evocative scenes in the Irish midlands.
This handcrafted 3D wooden map captures Lough Key's extraordinary island-studded shoreline, the Boyle Canal and Lough Key Forest Park in layered detail — made by hand in our Sligo studio from sustainable materials.
Perfect for:
- Boaters and canoeists who explore Lough Key's islands, bays and the Boyle Canal connection to the Shannon
- Walkers and nature lovers discovering Lough Key Forest Park's woodland trails, bog gardens and lakeside paths
- Anglers and fishing enthusiasts drawn to the lake's pike, perch and bream fishing
- Anyone with a connection to Lough Key, whether you grew up nearby, holiday in Roscommon each year, or simply love this beautiful and underappreciated corner of Ireland
Make it personal: Add a brass pin to mark a favourite spot — a favourite island, the forest park, the Boyle Canal, a family home or a special place along the lakeshore — with a short engraved message on the back.
Our Local Spots maps are round, framed wooden 3D maps, designed to capture meaningful Irish places in a simple, tactile format.
Each map measures approximately 220mm across and 42mm deep. It is ready to hang and also comes with a small clip-together stand, so it can be displayed on a wall, shelf, desk or sideboard.
Each map is framed without glass, allowing the depth, texture and natural wood grain to remain visible. Available with a natural or black frame.
Depths and elevations are shown in metres where included in the design.
You can add a short engraved message to the back of your map and a brass pin to mark a special place on the front for an additional charge.
To add this option, select “Map with engraving + brass pin” before adding the map to your cart, then enter your message and the Eircode or location details in the box provided.
If the place does not have an Eircode, you can describe the location instead.
Each Local Spots map is designed and made by Outcrop in our County Sligo studio.
We use geographic data to create the layered map design, then laser cut, stain, hand-sand, finish, frame and check each piece in our workshop before it is packed for delivery.
Made in small batches, each map carries the natural warmth of wood and the care of something made by hand.
Each Local Spots map is made from FSC-certified bamboo plywood, chosen for its strength, fine grain and natural warmth.
Our round frames are made from FSC-certified birch, sourced from sustainably managed Finnish forests. We use water-based, non-toxic glues and stains to finish each piece by hand.
Your map is wrapped in protective tissue and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box. Our packaging is plastic-free, and each piece is designed to be kept, gifted and enjoyed for years.
Your map comes ready to hang, and also includes a small clip-together wooden stand for displaying it on a shelf, desk or sideboard.
To use the stand, pop out the two pieces, slot them together and rest your map securely on top.
For best results, display indoors and avoid prolonged direct sunlight,
as this may gradually affect the blue colour or natural bamboo tone over time.
Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
Each Local Spots map is made to order in our Sligo studio, rather than held in large quantities of stock. This helps us make carefully, reduce waste and manage our small workshop space.
Please allow up to 2 weeks for dispatch during our normal production flow.
Your map will be carefully wrapped and presented in an unbleached, recycled cardboard box, ready to give as a gift. We do not include pricing inside the parcel, so it can be sent directly to the recipient.
If your order is a gift, you can leave us a note at checkout with any packing or delivery details.
If you need your map sooner, please contact us before ordering and we’ll let you know what is possible.
